Odes To Nature

A love letter to nature

When was the last time you wrote a love letter? Let alone a love letter to nature! If the answer’s a while – or perhaps never because you hadn't thought about it – you won’t be alone. That's why we challenged three spoken word artists to consider their relationship with nature and come up with a response.

The unique responses we got from up-and-coming and established artists lie at the heart of Odes to Nature, the campaign developed with Huck magazine. Like Huck, we’re concerned about those who don’t see the natural world as somewhere they have the right to embrace and explore.

The journeys taken by Amani Saeed, Suli Breaks and Sam Lee in their highly individual ‘odes’ reflect degrees of alienation from nature. At the same time, they embody moments of personal revelation and the quiet peace of connection. We hope that you enjoy watching and listening to them as much as we have.

When nature lovers partner ...

On the Edge and Huck decided to create the Odes series together because we have similar goals. For us, that’s wanting our varied audiences to explore their relationship with nature, fall in love with it, and through that process become its advocates.

Huck was launched in 2006 for an audience of skaters, surfers and snowboarders who understood that there was more to life. Since then, its interests have expanded to include punk, outsider art, activism and hip-hop. Now it’s widely recognised as a platform for alternative voices and the attention it gives to subcultures. Often it uses these as entry points to talk politics, identity, the significance of place, and art.

For Huck, as for On the Edge, empty rhetoric around the environment doesn’t cut it. And most importantly, it doesn’t help the natural world, either!
